How to Convert Measurements Without a Calculator

5 min read

You don't need perfect precision in daily life — you need a number within a few percent, fast. These shortcuts get you there.

Kilometers to miles

Multiply by 0.6: 100 km ≈ 60 miles (exact: 62.1). Even better, use Fibonacci numbers: since consecutive Fibonacci numbers have a ratio near 1.618 — almost exactly the km-to-mile factor of 1.609 — 5 km ≈ 3 mi, 8 km ≈ 5 mi, 13 km ≈ 8 mi.

Kilograms to pounds

Double it and add 10%: 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb (exact: 154.3). For pounds to kilograms, halve it and subtract 10% of the result: 160 lb → 80 − 8 = 72 kg (exact: 72.6).

Celsius to Fahrenheit

Double and add 30: 25°C → 80°F (exact: 77°F). Good enough for deciding whether you need a jacket.

Inches to centimeters

Multiply by 2.5: 10 inches ≈ 25 cm (exact: 25.4). Centimeters to inches: divide by 2.5, or multiply by 0.4.

When precision matters — medication, engineering, legal documents — skip the shortcuts and use the exact converters here.

Use anchors to catch mistakes

A few exact or familiar anchors make mental estimates safer: 1 inch is 2.54 cm, 1 mile is about 1.61 km, and 0°C is 32°F. If a mental shortcut produces an answer far from an anchor, pause and check which direction you converted. For example, 5 miles should be more than 5 kilometers, not less.

Round only after you have the result you need. Rounding the input and then the intermediate factor can make a short calculation look neat while quietly increasing its error.
